    Overview

    Historic Joplin Union Depot Available

The Joplin Union Depot, opened on June 30, 1911, served the Kansas City Southern, Missouri-Kansas-Texas, and Santa Fe Railroads, contributing to the growth of the Joplin area. The last train departed on November 3, 1969, and the building has remained vacant for over fifty years. Since 1972, various groups have proposed alternate uses for the property. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources, State Historic Preservation Office, has owned the building since 1998, seeking a buyer to rehabilitate the structure. Listing the Joplin Union Depot as a Place in Peril aims to raise awareness and attract a developer to restore this piece of Joplin’s history. Added to the National Historic Registry in 1973, the Depot is eligible for State and/or Federal Historic tax credits. Designed by Kansas City architect Louis Curtiss, the reinforced concrete structure contains approximately 22,640 square feet of usable space across the entry level, second floor, and basement, situated on 3.6 acres. The entry level features a two-story high waiting room, Rose Room restaurant, Union Depot Coffee Shop, restrooms, ticket booth, office, newsstand, men's smoking room, ladies retiring room, and baggage and freight area. The second level includes a greenhouse, fish tank, and offices. The basement houses a heating plant.
