ARTICLE III TRANSECT ZONES T1 - T5 AND SPECIAL DISTRICTS Section 300 PURPOSE The purpose of this section is to enable and encourage the implementation of the following poli- cies with the use of Transect Zones throughout the Town: a. Future development in neighborhoods and regional centers shall be compact, pedestrian- oriented and mixed-use; b. Ordinary activities of daily living should occur within walking distance of most dwellings, allowing independence to those who do not drive; c. Interconnected networks of streets should be designed to disperse traffic and reduce the length of automobile trips; d. Within neighborhoods, a range of housing types and price levels should be provided to ac- commodate diverse ages and incomes; e. Civic, institutional and commercial activity should be embedded in downtowns, not isolated in remote single-use complexes; f. Schools should be sized and located to enable children to walk or bicycle to them; g. A range of open space including parks, squares and playgrounds should be distributed be- tween neighborhoods.
