Overview

Historic Farm Estate with Brick House

This historic farm estate, known as the Hamilton/Johnston/Jarrett/Fleshman Farm, features a brick house built around 1840. The house displays Adam style architectural elements, including curved or polygonal projections. A hipped roof is incorporated into the design. The original detached kitchen has been integrated into the house via a breezeway, with additional living space added behind and above the kitchen. The bricks may have been crafted by John Dunn, a local brickmaker known for his work at the Blue Sulphur Springs Resort. While the exterior retains its Adamesque characteristics, the interior showcases style changes and renovations, including faux grain painting on the woodwork in the four main upstairs rooms. The property has only changed ownership three times in the past 170 years. The Hamilton family, who built the home, sold it to the Johnston-Jarrett family in 1855. In 1949, the Fleshman family acquired the property and has owned it for 76 years. The farm spans 48.6 acres. The property is also historically significant as the birthplace of Traveller, General Robert E. Lee's war horse, in 1857. Traveller was an American Saddlebred who won awards at local fairs before being acquired by General Lee. The main house has 4,028 square feet of living space.
