Overview

Historic Ranch with Ancient Petroglyphs

This 480-acre ranch in Winslow, Arizona, features a significant concentration of ancient petroglyphs, some dating back 13,000 years. The property is registered on the National Register of Historic Places and has been studied by researchers from institutions such as the Smithsonian Institution, the Heard Museum, the National Geographic Society, and Northern Arizona University. The property has been featured on PBS, The History Channel's Beyond Skinwalker Ranch and Ancient Aliens, and in the book 100 Years, 100 Ranchers. Chevelon Creek carves through the land, providing a year-round water source from natural springs within the canyon. A natural rock formation known as "The Steps" provided ancient inhabitants access to water, fish, and foraging resources. Within a quarter mile of The Steps, there are an estimated 3,000 petroglyphs. The Hopi Nation historically brought youth to The Steps for reflection, considering it sacred ground. The land supports four types of high-protein grasses and is home to wildlife, including jackrabbits, green-collared lizards, coyotes, antelope, elk, and deer. Outdoor activities include hiking, horseback riding, canoeing, rock climbing, and fishing. The property, once known as Rock Art Ranch, previously offered public tours and is currently closed to the public. The legendary Hashknife cowboys once ran cattle on this land. The potential uses for this land include a private retreat, a center for research, a historical tourist attraction, or a protected heritage site.
