Unless specifically defined below, words or phrases used shall be interpreted as to give them the meaning they have in common usage and to give this development code its most reasonable application given its stated purpose and objectives. 12.3 Defined Terms Article 12 Definitions 12.3.1 General Definitions Memphis/Shelby County Unified Development Code 502 ZTA 24-2 General Definitions The following definitions apply throughout this development code. Specific definitions for Chapter 6.1, Tree Removal are listed in Section 12.3.2. Specific definitions for Chapter 8.8, Floodplain Overlay District are listed in Section 12.3.3. Specific definitions for Chapter 4.9, Signs are listed in Section 12.3.4. A A-FRAME SIGN: A type of detached sign in which the back bracing is in the shape of an “A” (also known as a “sandwich board sign”). ABUTTING: Sharing a common border; adjoining. Parcels across the street from one another are not abutting. ACCESSORY SOLAR ENERGY SYSTEM: A photovoltaic solar energy system that is incidental and subordinate to a permitted principal use on the same site, designed to produce electrical energy primarily for on -site consumption, and is either mounted to a structure associated with that principal use or is mounted to the ground and does not exceed twenty (20) acres within the fenced area. ACCESSORY STRUCTURE: A structure incidental and subordinate to a permitted principal structure that is consistent with the structures and uses permitted in the zoning district in which it is located (see Chapter 2.7 for additional requirements). A structure that is functionally part of the main building, enclosed by a roof or wall and not substantially open to the environment shall be considered an appurtenance to the principal structure, and not an accessory structure.
