    Overview

This 400-acre tract is located in Torch Lake Township, Houghton County, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The property is situated in a recreational area near Torch Lake, Portage Lake, and Lake Superior, on the eastern side of the Keweenaw Peninsula. The Keweenaw area is known for its fall foliage, with trails for hiking and biking, sugar sand beaches, and blueberry and raspberry picking spots. In winter, the area offers back country skiing at Mt. Bohemia Ski Hill. The Gay Trail, a Multi-Use State Trail, is accessible via the Post Road, north of Rice Lake Road. The 400-acre tract was owned by timber companies since the 1900s. A forest fire in the 1940s led to the regeneration of approximately 150 acres of aspen. About 106 acres include tree species of red maple, sugar maple, yellow birch and ash, with scattered spruce, fir, and white pine mix. Approximately 25 acres consist of northern hardwoods, including sugar maple, red maple, hemlock, basswood, and yellow birch. McCallum Creek passes through the northwestern parts of the property, creating a wetland management area of about 128 acres with marsh and beaver ponds. The largest pond is about 3 acres in size and about 12 feet deep. The waters of McCallum Creek originate northeast of the property and flow westerly for about 4 miles, emptying into Torch Lake. The creek may support brook trout, and the ponds are visited by ducks, geese, and other wildlife. The 400 acres is currently enrolled in the Michigan CFA Program, with objectives to manage the forest stands to maximize growth, health, and vigor, while supporting recreation, wildlife habitat, and watershed protection. Turkey, whitetail deer, and bear sightings have been reported on the parcel.
