    Overview

The Historic Commerce Building, also known as 35 E. Gay St., formerly housed the Columbia Building & Loans starting in 1926. Tellers were located on the west wall, and the vault, which remains today, served as the safe. Around 1940, Ohio Bell occupied the entire five-story building. During this period, a 10-foot drop ceiling was installed in the bank lobby on the first floor, concealing the chandelier and arching windows for approximately 60 years. Upon the departure of the last tenant from the first-floor space in 2002, the ceiling was removed, revealing a century-old chandelier. The tile floor was removed, exposing marble flooring that is also a century old. Above the vault, original marble can be found, and the archway at the building's entrance is made of granite that is 100 years old. The property is suitable for retail, office, and restaurant use.
