Rockdale Industrial Land Opportunity
The property is located on the former site of the International & Great Northern (I&GN) Railroad, which historically dominated Texas railroads. The I&GN line, after changing ownership and names, was acquired by Missouri Pacific (MP) in 1925 and later by Union Pacific (UP) in 1982, ultimately merging into UP in 1997. Most of these lines remain active under UP, excluding the abandoned Fort Worth route. The San Antonio & Aransas Pass (SA&AP) Line became part of Southern Pacific (SP) in 1925, which abandoned the line from Giddings through Rockdale to Cameron in 1959. The Rockdale, Sandow & Southern (RS&S) Railroad, originally a six-mile mine spur built in 1919, became a common carrier in 1924 to support lignite shipments, continuing local service until 1950. In 1952, Alcoa built a smelter nearby and upgraded RS&S for shipping aluminum and ores. The Rockdale smelter, once the world’s largest, was shut down in 2008 due to pollution issues. Alcoa sold the land in 2021 to developers, and plans for a large industrial complex were announced in 2023. The RS&S tracks remain intact but are currently out of service.
