    Overview

    Historic Building with Commercial, Residential Units

    This historic building, originally constructed in 1917 by General Chemical Company, stands at the entrance to Overlook Colony. The two-story building with a full basement initially served as the community center for Overlook Colony, housing employees in substantial homes. Later known as Redman's Hall, it hosted a fraternal group, activities of the Holy Rosary Church, and stores like Shinn's and Steins. Organizational meetings of the Claymont Fire Company were held in the building, and until 1924, it provided rooms for the educational needs of the children. In 1989, new owners modernized the structure while preserving its historical glory. They received a New Castle County Historic Preservation Award in 2000 and a grant of $2,500 from General Chemical in 2002 to beautify the front of the building. The property features 10 to 12 units, based on how it is broken down, comprising both commercial and residential spaces. The current owner has increased rents and made numerous improvements. All tenant payments are being converted to online payments. A basement unit is also coming up for rent.
