Overview

Michigan 400-Acre Recreational Land

This 400-acre tract is located in Torch Lake Township, Houghton County, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, a recreational area surrounded by Torch Lake, Portage Lake, and Lake Superior. The county lies on the eastern side of the Keweenaw Peninsula. The Keweenaw area is known for fall colors and offers trails for hiking and biking, sugar sand beaches, and spots for blueberry and raspberry picking in summer. In the winter, there is back country skiing at Mt. Bohemia Ski Hill. Access to the Gay Trail, a Multi-Use State Trail, is just north of Rice Lake Road, via the Post Road. The 400-acre tract was owned by timber companies since the 1900s. A forest fire in the 1940s created an excellent regeneration of about 150 acres of aspen. Approximately 106 acres of land includes tree species of red maple, sugar maple, yellow birch and ash, with scattered spruce, fir, and white pine mix. About 25 acres of land has northern hardwoods, including sugar maple, red maple, hemlock, basswood and yellow birch. The McCallum Creek passes through north western parts of this property, creating a wetland management area of about 128 acres consisting of a mix of marsh, and beaver ponds. The largest pond is about 3 acres in size and about 12 feet deep. The waters of the McCallum creek originate just northeast of the property, flow westerly for about 4 miles, and empty into Torch Lake. The creek may support brook trout. The ponds are visited by ducks, geese and wildlife native to wetland areas. The 400 acres is currently enrolled in the Michigan CFA Program. There have been turkey, whitetail deer, and bear sightings on this parcel. The current owners manage the forest tract stands to maximize growth, health, vigor, in conjunction to support recreation, wildlife habitat and watershed protection.
