Main Key is a 145.5-acre private island located in Barnes Sound, Monroe County, FL. The island features over a mile of white sandy beaches along its eastern shoreline. The western and southern shorelines, spanning over 4 miles, are characterized by mangroves reaching heights of 30 to 50 feet, creating a habitat for gamefish, shellfish, sea mammals, and tropical birds. The property is owned by a TIFF Deed. With 12 upland acres, a substantial structure could be constructed without ROGO requirements. Historically, in the 1930s and 40s, there were 3 large structures on the SE Government Lot area. A new dock permit includes a lift, platform, and mooring slip for the SE beach off the old homesite. An additional permit is being applied for on the south side of Main Key for a 135 ft dock with a 40 ft platform and seven heavy pilings to moor a large vessel of up to 100 ft in length. A tide station was established by the USGS, later NOAA, in the 1930s. 'The Tides at Main Key' was a well-known reference in Marine Weather forecasts on South Florida TV and NOAA Weather Radio for the Upper Keys and Florida Bay. The zoning is OS - Offshore Island District.
