The McGills Restaurant Building, constructed around 1893, is located in the center of Crested Butte on Elk Avenue. Originally the Town's grocery store run by Tony and Elanor Stephanic until 1988, the building underwent a major renovation in 2005. This renovation included foundational repairs, new electrical, heating, plumbing, and drywall. The original floors were removed, refinished, and reinstalled. A new roof was installed at that time and redone in 2016. Since the remodel, the first floor has been occupied by McGills Restaurant, a breakfast and lunch establishment. The second floor features a 2-bedroom, 2-bath apartment with a loft, currently rented on a month-to-month basis. Situated only 50 feet from the center of town at 3rd and Elk, 228 Elk commands a central, high-traffic location within the Town's historic district. In addition to restaurant use, general retail business opportunities are permitted.
